Response to NHSI proposals for Essential Services Laboratories

22/02/2018 10:18:33

The ACB has been aware for some time of the recently published NHSI document about the configuration of Essential Services Laboratories.  We had shared the document to the limited extent allowed and had commented on it, but were not aware it was to be published in this form.  We indicated that we were not prepared to endorse the version we saw without a proper consultation and opportunity to consider it.

The document as published does not contain reference to Clinical Scientist / Medical roles.  It is our understanding that the importance of these roles in the system is fully recognised, but that in the model proposed it is intended that Clinical Scientists / Medical staff would be based in Hub Laboratories, visiting and overseeing Essential Services Laboratories as required.

It remains vital for ACB members to engage with local management to influence the development of models to ensure that an appropriate staff mixture is in place to provide effective and efficient laboratory services.  The ACB will continue to emphasise the importance of Clinical Scientists and Medical Staff in blood sciences and other aspects of Laboratory Medicine.
