EFLM e-seminar
by the EFLM Working Group on Distance Education and e-Learning

March 18, 2015 - h. 16.00-17.00 pm CET (do not forget to check your time zone)

Harmonisation in Laboratory Medicine

The e-seminar will cover topics such as the meaning of harmonization in clinical laboratories, which includes consideration of pre-analytical, intra-analytical and post-analytical aspects to achieve an ideal picture of laboratory tests being comparable with no influence from the measurement procedure used, or when and where it took place. To achieve this, some aspects must be taken into consideration, like the different steps that may influence the ultimate quality of laboratory information. The need for such harmonization is driven by patient safety, patient empowerment, accreditation, clinical guidelines, public/patient confusion and electronic patient records, all of which will also be covered in the seminar.

These topics will be covered by Professor Mario Plebani, Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology at the School of Medicine, University of Padova, as well as Chief of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University Hospital of Padova and Chief of the Center of Biomedical Research, and Chairman of the IFCC Working group on “Laboratory errors and patient safety” (WG LEPS). Dr. Plebani is also Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and co-Editor in Chief of Diagnosis, with 880 full papers, more than 900 abstracts, and several books and book chapters published, making him a guest speaker at many national and international conferences.

The moderator for the seminar will be Dr. Graham Beastall, who has just completed six years as President of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry & Laboratory Medicine (IFCC).
