OMIM -- Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
OMIM is a database containing over 10,000 entries of human genes and genetic
disorders with links to the NCBI Entrez database of MEDLINE articles. The
home page has two sub-headings to ease the indexing of databases:
Browse OMIM
Under this sub-heading it is possible to search the OMIM database (with
provision to limit a search to a particular field), view the details about
a gene regarding its location in the genome (OMIM Gene Map) and the result
of its deficiency (OMIM Morbid Map). There is a key which allows interpretation
of the aforementioned maps and an index to OMIM entries (OMIM numbering
and symbols) which describes the 6-digit number each entry is allocated. The
OMIM Gene Table provides an alphabetical list of the genes in the OMIM
database. There is a useful update page which lists new additions
and updates to the OMIM database.
ExPASy Molecular Biology Server
ExPASy describes each type of characterized enzyme for which an EC (Enzyme
Commission) number has been allocated. The database is based upon the recommendations
of the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).
It is easy to access and is well presented. A search will yield information
such as the reaction catalysed and alternative names for the enzyme. Information
on diseases resulting from a deficiency of the enzyme is also given.
The site has interactive access to a map of "Biochemical Pathways" (Boehringer
Mannheim). This facility is not only useful for trainee biochemists but
also for those interested in inherited metabolic disorders.
The site enables access to SWISSPROT, an annotated protein sequence database.
A visit to this site is highly recommended!
