Commencing in 1998, Diagnostic Products Corporation UK Ltd originally presented two bursaries for the best posters at the National Meeting. Since 2003, this was replaced by three bursaries of £500, £250 and £100 which have been presented by the company for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best posters. The bursaries are now donated by Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics Ltd. Only the winner(s) of the first prize are listed below. The aim of the Awards is to 'Promote innovation in clinical laboratories' and the bursaries may be used either to support further research on the winner’s poster topic or to help defray the costs incurred in travel to present the work at other scientific meetings.
The competition is open to all those displaying posters at Focus meetings, except for commercial companies and invited speakers. Posters will be selected from those authors who indicate on the Abstract submission form that they wish their poster to be considered for the DPB Bursary. Authors of abstracts selected for oral presentation who wish to be considered for the award will also be required to display a poster of their work in order to be eligible.
The Analytical Investigations Standing Committee (AISC) of the Scientific Committee will judge the posters according to set criteria: original technological innovation, timeliness in terms of addressing current or future needs, improvement over existing techniques, clarity and quality of presentation, and understanding of the technology by the presenting author. The winner will be required to submit a short report of their future research to the AISC, or to prepare a report on the scientific meeting attended.
The bursaries were awarded for the first time in 1998.
