First donated in 1971 by Miles Laboratories Ltd., Ames Division and later by Bayer Diagnostics UK Ltd. Now donated by Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics Ltd.
The award is made on the basis of an oral communication presented by a member of the Association under 35 years of age on the date of the competition. The winner of the Award receives a Silver Medal and a cheque for £250.
Applications to take part in the competition are made at the time of submission of an abstract to the National Meeting. Applicants must be prepared to certify that the work, or a substantial and clearly defined part of it, is his or her own. The Awards Committee (comprising the President of the Association, the Chairman of Council, the Association Secretary, the Association Meetings Secretary and a representative of Bayer Diagnostics UK Ltd) selects participants for the competition from the submitted abstracts. Not less than six weeks before the competition, the successful applicants will be informed of their involvement. All competitors are encouraged to consider submitting their completed study for possible publication in the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry.
At the competition itself, participants will be given 15 minutes to make their presentation and a further 5 minutes for questions. The judges on the Awards Committee will look for evidence of original science that is relevant to Clinical Biochemistry. They will also look for a clear and interesting delivery, careful timing, good audiovisual aids and the ability to discuss the project and answer questions.
The presentation to the winner will be made during the evening of the day on which the
competition is held.
